Beyond the pass: the credential landscape and staying certified
Lesson 4 of 4 in Exam Mastery: Scenario Technique, Pacing, and the Credential Landscape.
The AIGP was the first major vendor-neutral AI governance credential, and it remains the generalist anchor — but it now sits in a growing neighbourhood. Knowing the map matters twice: once for your own career sequencing, and once because the exam itself assumes you understand how frameworks, standards, and assurance ecosystems divide the labour.
Logistics you should have cold before booking: the exam costs $799 (non-member) / $649 (member), must be taken within one year of purchase, and is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres or via OnVUE remote proctoring (plan for ID verification and a room scan; a failed environment check can forfeit the attempt). Certification runs on a two-year term requiring 20 CPE credits aligned to the BoK, funded either by the certification maintenance fee ($250 per term — bundled into the exam fee for a non-member’s first term) or by holding IAPP membership ($295/year) instead. Retakes are discounted, and existing IAPP cert holders get exam discounts — a nudge toward the stacking strategies below.
| Credential | Focus | Best stacked by |
|---|---|---|
IAPP AIGP | Vendor-neutral AI governance competency across the full lifecycle — the generalist baseline | Anyone whose title will contain ‘AI governance’; the hub the others orbit |
IAPP CIPP/E · CIPM · CIPT | EU privacy law depth / privacy program management / privacy technology | Privacy professionals extending into AI — CIPP/E pairs naturally with the AIGP’s EU AI Act weighting |
ISACA AAIA · AAISM | AI audit (AAIA) and AI security management (AAISM) | Auditors and security leaders who need assurance-side or defence-side depth the AIGP only surveys |
IEEE CertifAIEd | Ethics-focused assessment of autonomous intelligent systems | Assessors doing ethics-certification work on specific systems |
ISO/IEC 42001 lead implementer / auditor | Building or auditing AI management systems against the certifiable standard | Practitioners operating AIMS programs — see iso-standards/certification-and-audit for the ecosystem |
ForHumanity certified auditor | Independent audit of AI systems against published audit criteria | Independent-assurance specialists in algorithmic audit |
A workable sequencing heuristic: breadth first, then the assurance seat you actually occupy. The AIGP gives every AI-governance role its shared vocabulary. After that, program builders head toward ISO/IEC 42001 implementer training and the AIMS world; auditors toward AAIA, 42001 lead auditor, or ForHumanity; privacy-anchored professionals deepen with CIPP/E or CIPM; security leaders with AAISM. Recertification is where the sequencing pays twice — CPE activities for one credential frequently qualify for others, so a deliberate stack maintains itself more cheaply than an accidental one.
Whatever you stack later, the next 90 seconds of your prep are the same: take the simulator below in full-exam mode, read your per-domain breakdown the way lesson 2 taught you to read a score report, and point your remaining study hours at the weakest competency it names.
Tool: AIGP Exam Simulator — The capstone: a full blueprint-weighted mock — 100 questions, 2.75-hour clock, optional break, flag-and-return, and an IAPP-style scaled score report with per-domain breakdown.
