Booking, exam day, and staying certified

The commercial mechanics are simple but full of deadlines. The exam costs $799 (non-member) or $649 (IAPP member). Buying it starts a one-year clock: you must sit the exam within twelve months of purchase, scheduled through your MyIAPP account into either a Pearson VUE test centre or OnVUE remote proctoring at home. The session runs 2 hours 45 minutes including an optional 15-minute break — so 2.5 hours of actual answering time for 100 questions.

Failed attempts are not the end: retakes are offered at a discounted fee, and your immediate domain-level score breakdown tells you exactly where to aim the second run. Holders of existing IAPP certifications also get pricing consideration — check the store for current combinations.

The AIGP journey, purchase to renewal

  1. Purchase exam

    $799 non-member / $649 member. The 12-month exam window starts now — do not buy before you are roughly 8–12 weeks from readiness.

  2. Schedule via MyIAPP

    Choose Pearson VUE test centre or OnVUE remote. Reschedule rules and fees apply as the date approaches — read them before booking.

  3. Exam day: 100 questions, 2.75 h

    Includes an optional 15-minute break. ID verification at centre; webcam room scan for OnVUE.

  4. Immediate result + domain breakdown

    Scaled 100–500; pass at 300. The breakdown is your retake map if needed.

  5. Discounted retake

    Target the weakest domains from your breakdown; re-drill before rebooking.

  6. Certified: 2-year term begins

    Your certification maintenance term starts. First-term maintenance fee is bundled into the exam price for non-members.

  7. Earn 20 CPE credits

    Over the 2-year term, aligned to the AIGP BoK: IAPP events, web conferences, self-reported governance activities.

  8. Renew: CMF or membership

    $250 certification maintenance fee per term — or hold IAPP membership ($295/yr) instead. Lapse leads to suspension, then reinstatement hurdles.

Test centre or OnVUE remote — which should I pick?

Centres remove environment risk: no webcam scans of your desk, no bandwidth anxiety, a proctor who handles problems in person. OnVUE trades that for convenience — but you must present a cleared workspace (no papers, second monitors, or phones in reach), pass an ID check and a webcam room scan, and stay on camera throughout. If your home setup is anything less than reliably quiet and private, book the centre.

How does the 15-minute break work?

The break is optional and scheduled into the 2.75-hour session. Treat it as a strategic asset: taking it around the midpoint measurably restores concentration for the final stretch. On OnVUE, follow the platform’s break procedure exactly — leaving camera view outside a sanctioned break can void your exam.

What happens if I fail?

You receive your scaled score and per-domain percentages immediately. Retakes are discounted, and there is no shame math here: the domain breakdown converts a fail into a diagnosis. Most failed candidates who retake after targeted drilling of their two weakest domains pass on the second attempt — the material did not change, the allocation did.

What does staying certified actually cost?

The credential runs on two-year terms. Each term you owe 20 CPE credits aligned to the AIGP BoK (conference sessions, IAPP web conferences, self-reported professional activities) plus either the $250 certification maintenance fee or active IAPP membership ($295/yr), which covers maintenance across all your IAPP certifications. For non-members, the first term’s maintenance fee is bundled into the exam price. Miss the requirements and the certification is suspended, then requires reinstatement.
